Tutors Needed!!

Please see below regarding possible paid tutor positions for the athletic department:

The Athletic Association's Hearn Academic Center has job openings for academic tutors in the following subjects for the school year 2011-2012:

 Biology
 Chemistry
 Physics
 Psychology
 Sociology
 Economics
 Management
 History
 History, technology & society
 Political science
 Public policy
 International affairs

Requirements include:

You have at least sophomore level standing with the Institute.
You have earned a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
You have earned B's, preferably A's, in the course.
You provide a resume & written recommendation, preferably from a professor or TA.

Tutoring with the Athletic Association is an excellent way to help other students, ensure your knowledge before graduate or licensure examinations, build your resume, and gain job skills while becoming proficient in your major and earning a little money.  Beginning pay for undergraduates is $10.00/hour and $12.00/hour for graduate students.

Please contact Christen Steele (csteele@at.gtaa.gatech.edu) for an application or with any questions you may have.  We will begin interviewing soon and look forward to reading your applications.

ECON Clarification (And Process Control Update)

Happy Thursday folks!   Hopefully most of everyone has gotten at least 99% of their schedule shaken out by now.  I wanted to touch bease on a couple of quick subjects that seem to still be coming up.

For your Economics requirement you can take any one of the four following:

ECON 2100
ECON 2101
ECON 2105
ECON 2106

See REGISTRAR  for more info.  (Second paragraph above the chart)

PROCESS CONTROL  (CHBE 4400)

Dr. Agrawal will NOT be sending out an email asking if you have to have Process Control to graduate. We feel like we have been contacted by anyone who needs it.

If and only if you are graduating in THE FALL and have to take PC,  please contact us immediately.  If you don't have to take PC and just want to take it this semester,  unfortunatly there are no seats available.  As always let us know if you have any questions.

See everybody next week!!

Registration... Utter Chaos? Or Controlled Madness??

With Fall registration upon us, it appears that we continue to answer some of the same questions constantly, so we thought it best to write an article concerning some of the more popular ones.  Hopefully we can answer most of your questions here, but as always let us know if you have more!

OVERLOADS
We just don't do them.  There's really no need to ask. What we do instead is constantly monitor the number of seats in all of our CHBE core courses throughout registration.  We have to incrementally increase seats in each of our sections to keep them as even as possible. We cannot promise you that you will be able to get a certain section at a certain time.  We can tell you however, that if you need a core course to move on, 99.99% of the time there will eventually be an open seat.  This is true for every course except....

CHBE 4200 and 4400  (U.O. and Process Control)  Unit Ops and Process control is a whole other story.  The seats in these courses are very limited and we have to carefully monitor these courses to make sure that those students who need these classes and are graduating this, their last semester, get a seat.  Be on the lookout for an email from Dr. Agrawal during registration.  He will make a call for anyone who absolutely needs the course to respond to the email to let us know.  We then review the transcripts of all  those who responded and do what we can to find seats for those who absolutely need it.

PERMITS
The only classes that ask for permits in CHBE are research,  CHBE 2100 and  CHBE 4763 and 4764.

Research
You must have a form signed by the professor you are currently doing research for.  You can obtain this from  the front desk in the main CHBE office on the first floor atrium of FORD ES&T. Once the form is signed, you return the permit to the advising office and a permit is entered. You will then sign up for the course in OSCAR BUT BE CAREFUL!! The number of hours defaults to 1, and you must change this when signing up for the course.  (Typically you will change this to 3)

CHBE 2100
There is never any reason for a CHBE student to use this. This is for non CHBE majors wanting to take the course. As long as you have the pre-reqs you are good to go.

CHBE 4763 and 4764
You must ask for a permit through OSCAR to take this course.  You must have a minimum 2.8 GPA cumulative to take the course.  Priority is given to CHBE students during Phase I.  Remember that just because you receive the permit,  it does not guarantee you a seat!!

Volunteers needed for GT 1000!

We are looking for undergraduate CHBE students to serve as volunteer Team Leaders for the CHBE section of GT1000.  This section is designed to teach CHBE freshman what our major is all about and help them adjust to college life as a chemical and biomolecular engineer. The course is Wednesdays 2-3pm. You would be required to attend class, assist a small group of students in the class and help coordinate some presentations on college life at Georgia Tech for the students. It is a great way to help your fellow students deal with the same freshman year surprises that you dealt with and it might not look too bad on your resume.  The only requirement for a Team Leader is to be a CHBE student in good standing who has either taken CHBE2100 or is taking CHBE2100.

To apply, simply send an email indicating your willingness to participate to Dr. Ludovice at pete.ludovice@chbe.gatech.edu . If you have already signed up to be a GT1000 Team Leader and would like to be a TL in the CHBE section please send Dr. Ludovice an email so he may request you for this section.
