Research Permits

When signing up for CHBE undergraduate research you must turn in the permit form found at the CHBE front desk.  Once this form is signed, if there is not a section for your professor then we will create one and then enter a permit for you. You will receive an auto-generated email when the permit is entered asking you to register for the course. Remember that once you get the permit you must sign up for the course and change the number of hours you are registered for. (It defaults to 1).

This can be done during PHASE I or II, and as always let the CHBE advising office know if you have any questions.

Oh...  GOOD LUCK ON FINALS EVERYBODY!!

Summer Internship Opportunity (FILLED!)

Check out the following from current CHBE student Melissa Davis!

Imperial Sugar Company is looking for two Sophomore/Junior chemical or mechanical engineering students from Tech to intern this summer.  It was a great experience for me because each intern is assigned a mentor (I learned so much from mine) and a project that involves a lot of hand-on experience in the refinery. I worked on optimizing their enzyme usage and spent a lot of time in both the refinery and the laboratory. The company culture is very welcoming and everyone is eager to tell you about the process - I had a fun summer working at the refinery and living right outside Savannah. The pay is great AND they pay all your travelling expenses and accommodations. If anyone is interested they can email me (madavis@gatech.edu) or Imperial's HR manager, George Muller (george.muller@imperialsugar.com).

Position has been filled and is no longer available.  Thanks!!

More Registration Tips

As the first week of  registration dies down, we thought we'd give everyone a few more things to think about.  Some of this may seem old hat to our registration veterans,  but to you rookies out there this info can come in very handy.

3210  is a CO REQ for 3225 and 4300.  OSCAR will not let you sign up for Separations or Kinetics unless you are already signed up for Transport II.

Safety is a Co-req for Senior Design:  See above.

No more seats opened during PHASE I:  This is nothing new. This year however, we did start out with many more seats open than in the past. We will not open any more seats until Phase II.

Waitlisting:  Here's a good rule of thumb to use:  If there is even 1 person waitlisted but there are 20 open seats...  you cannot take one of those open seats.  You must wait in line.

Think of it this way.  You go into a restaurant and see 10 open tables. You ask the hostess for a table but are told you cannot have one because there is a waitlist. You must go on the list behind the others already waiting, as they will get their chance for the table first.  At the restaurant this is typically about 5-10 minutes.  If they do not answer, then the next person on the list goes.  Here at Tech you get 12 hours to answer for your "table". (class)

As always thank you all for your patience during this busy time and good luck the rest of the semester!

With the first day of registration upon us,  I wanted to throw a few pointers out and things to remember:

CHBE 3225  never in summer
CHBE 4400  never in summer
CHBE electives  never in summer

CHBE 4505 (3 hour Senior Design)  never in fall
CHBE 4310  (required for biotech)  ONLY in fall

OVERLOADS
We just don't do them.  There's really no need to ask. What we do instead is constantly monitor the number of seats in all of our CHBE core courses throughout registration.  We have to incrementally increase seats in each of our sections to keep them as even as possible. We cannot promise you that you will be able to get a certain section at a certain time.  We can tell you however, that if you need a core course to move on, 99.99% of the time there will eventually be an open seat.  This is true for every course except....

CHBE 4200 and 4400  (U.O. and Process Control)  Unit Ops and Process control is a whole other story.  The seats in these courses are very limited and we have to carefully monitor these courses to make sure that those students who need these classes and are graduating this, their last semester, get a seat.  Be on the lookout for an email from Mr Hardin during Phase II registration.  He will make a call for anyone who absolutely needs the course to graduate to respond to the email to let us know.  We then review the transcripts of all  those who responded and do what we can to find seats for those who absolutely need it.

PERMITS
The only classes that ask for permits in CHBE are research  and  CHBE 4763 and 4764.

Research
You must have a form signed by the professor you are currently doing research for.  You can obtain this from  the front desk in the main CHBE office on the first floor atrium of FORD ES&T. Once the form is signed, you return the permit to the advising office and a permit is entered. You will then sign up for the course in OSCAR BUT BE CAREFUL!! The number of hours defaults to 1, and you must change this when signing up for the course.  (Typically you will change this to 3)

CHBE 4763 and 4764
You must ask for a permit through OSCAR to take this course.  You must have a minimum 2.8 GPA cumulative to take the course.  Priority is given to CHBE students during Phase I.  Remember that just because you receive the permit,  it does not guarantee you a seat!!
