Women in Engineering

The M&M (Mentors & Mentees) Program is a peer-mentoring program for undergraduate female engineering students, where Freshmen are matched with Juniors, and Sophomores with Seniors within the same major.  M&M is a unique opportunity to build friendships with other students from across campus as well as for underclassman to find an upperclassman who can offer support and guidance so they’re not facing the challenges of succeeding at Tech alone.

This year we are excited to announce a new event to kick-off the M&M Program called Spin Matching!  Instead of WIE matching mentors & mentees, we want you to help us.  At this fun and highly interactive event which will be held on Tuesday, October 23rd from 5:30-7:00 p.m. mentees will have the chance to meet several potential mentors and then let WIE know their mentor preferences.  After you have been matched, in addition to encouraging mentoring pairs to meet at times and venues of their choice, WIE plans monthly lunches with guest speakers to give M&M participants the chance to talk about various topics including resumes, goal-setting, leadership, study skills, time management and much more!

For more information and to sign-up to be an M&M Mentor or Mentee, please go to http://www.coe.gatech.edu/content/mm-mentoring

Deadline to Sign-up to be a MentorMonday, October 1st

Research opportunity

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking applicants for its Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO) program, which provides an invaluable opportunity for students with
strong academic standing who are from populations underrepresented in biomedical research.

Candidates who are college-level seniors, medical school students, or doctoral candidates nearing their dissertation defense and from a population underrepresented in the biomedical sciences are eligible.

We are looking for dedicated science students interested in joining the NIAID research community. During the 4-day program, students will hear lectures from world-renowned scientists and interview for potential research training positions at the Institute?s Maryland and Montana laboratories. This year's program marks 10 years of INRO and takes place in Bethesda, Maryland, on the NIH campus in early February. Students' expenses for travel, hotel accommodations, and meals will be paid.

Applications are being accepted through October 15, 2012. To learn more about INRO, to check eligibility, and to apply, visit: http://www.niaid.nih.gov/labsandresources/labs/training/inro/Pages/default.aspx

Student Involvement Opportunities

As the new year kicks off, many student organizations are welcoming new members.  Please stay tuned to the Blog for updates on some activities and organizations that may be of interest to you.

Engineers Without Borders at Georgia Tech is a humanitarian engineering organization that works to design and implement health and infrastructure solutions in developing countries. Our projects are almost entirely student designed and lead. In addition to our international projects, EWB-GT also has a few local projects that work to research appropriate technologies and spread the word about our work.

We are hoping to extend our member base this year, so please note that EWB is not just for civil and environmental engineers. We welcome and encourage members from all disciplines, even those that are non-engineering related. There are several aspects necessary to ensuring the success of our projects, so there is definitely a job for everyone.

Our first meeting will be Monday night (8/27/12) at 6:00 p.m. in Klaus 1456. For those who can’t make it, we will also be having a New Member Orientation on September 7th at 6:00 p.m., location TBA. If you are interested in joining our organization, please visit our website ewb-gt.org

A Few Registration Reminders

Classes have started (good luck everyone!!) but we thought we'd post an older article that still has a lot of good information.

CHBE 3225  never in summer
CHBE 4400  never in summer
CHBE electives  never in summer

CHBE 4310  (required for biotech)  ONLY in fall

DegreeWorks:  Familiarize yourself with this immediately!

Pass/Fail:  See Here:

OVERLOADS
We just don't do them.  There's really no need to ask. What we do instead is constantly monitor the number of seats in all of our CHBE core courses throughout registration.  We have to incrementally increase seats in each of our sections to keep them as even as possible. We cannot promise you that you will be able to get a certain section at a certain time.  We can tell you however, that if you need a core course to move on, 99.99% of the time there will eventually be an open seat.  This is true for every course except....

CHBE 4200 and 4400  (U.O. and Process Control)  Unit Ops and Process control is a whole other story.  The seats in these courses are very limited and we have to carefully monitor these courses to make sure that those students who need these classes and are graduating this, their last semester, get a seat.  Be on the lookout for an email from Mr Hardin during Phase II registration.  He will make a call for anyone who absolutely needs the course to graduate to respond to the email to let us know.  We then review the transcripts of all  those who responded and do what we can to find seats for those who absolutely need it.

PERMITS
The only classes that ask for permits in CHBE are research  and  CHBE 4763 and 4764.

Research
You must have a form signed by the professor you are currently doing research for.  You can obtain this from  the front desk in the main CHBE office on the first floor atrium of FORD ES&T. Once the form is signed, you return the permit to the advising office and a permit is entered. You will then sign up for the course in OSCAR BUT BE CAREFUL!! The number of hours defaults to 1, and you must change this when signing up for the course.  (Typically you will change this to 3)

CHBE 4763 and 4764
You must ask for a permit through OSCAR to take this course.  You must have a minimum 2.8 GPA cumulative to take the course.  Priority is given to CHBE students during Phase I.  Remember that just because you receive the permit,  it does not guarantee you a seat!!

Fall Phase II Registration

Happy registration everyone!!

As this week continues, and everyone continues to go crazy trying to find that perfect schedule, the advising office decided we would throw out a couple of short tips this week to try and ease your frustrations.

First off we have the PERMIT /OVERLOAD/ PRE_REQ monster!

Since every single department handles permits differently, CHBE advising normally asks you to contact someone in the department who currently teaches the course that you want the overload for.

So how do you find out who that is?

One great way is to use the Registrar's site to check out the awesome list they have put together outlining most of the different school policies located here:

http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/registration/oprequest.php

Be sure to check out the entire "registration" tab on the registrar's site for some great tips and regulations surrounding registration time!

Waitlisting Fall 2012

Welcome back everybody and Happy Fall Semester!

Some may have missed the email the registrar sent out about the waitlisting feature so we decided to write a little something here to try and explain what is going on.

Waitlisting will not be turned on until Monday.  This has been updated to next Monday the 20th!!! This means that any class that you are waitlisted for or that has waitlisted seats will not kick in until the registrar turns the system "on" on Monday .

It is our intention to open enough seats to accommodate everyone on the waitlist for the core CHBE courses.

Remember that a waitlist spot does NOT guarantee you a seat in that section.  If there are open seats in other sections, please grab the open seat!

This DOES NOT INCLUDE Process Control or Unit Ops. I will be working with graduating seniors to give them first priority to those seats.  This also DOES NOT APPLY to CHBE electives.

If you are a FALL 2012 graduating Senior please shoot me an email and let me know if it is PC or UO that you need.  We will give you until Wednesday afternoon to contact us regarding this before we open the UO and PC seats.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone next week and good luck this semester!!

GT 1000 Team Leaders Needed!

Hey CHBEs,

My name is Ibrahim Farhoud and I will be a Team Leader for GT1000 in the Fall. We are looking for undergraduate CHBE students to volunteer to help with the largest GT1000 section on campus.  The course is designed to teach CHBE freshman what our major is all about and help them adjust to college life as a chemical and biomolecular engineer and will be lead by Dr. Pete Ludovice. The course is Wednesdays 2-3pm. You would have to attend class, assist a small group of students in the class and help coordinate some activities at Georgia Tech for the students.  The only requirement for a Team Leader is to be a CHBE student in good standing who has either taken CHBE2100 or is taking CHBE2100.

To apply, simply send an email indicating your willingness to participate to myself at ifarhoud3@gatech.edu . If you have already signed up to be a GT1000 Team Leader and would like to be a TL in the CHBE section please send me an email and we will request you for this section.

It is a great way to help your fellow students deal with the same freshman year surprises that you dealt with and looks great on your resume.
