Shell Drilling and Production Camp

Shell has some open spots in their “Shell Drilling & Production Camp” in Robert, Louisiana (north of New Orleans) on March 17-22, 2013.  The camp is an outstanding opportunity to gain exposure to the energy industry and upstream operations, and offers a “hands on” environment for students. The facility has equipment and lab space, which emulates an onshore and offshore working environment with training on “live” systems.  

 

Students are responsible for the cost of round-trip transportation from Georgia Tech to the New Orleans airport. All other expenses for the camp, as well as transportation from the airport to the camp, are paid for by Shell.

Is Teaching in your Future?

Have you ever considered a career in pre-college education after receiving your engineering degree?  On Thursday, February 28 at 11:00 am in ES&T Room L1255, Susan Belmonte will present a seminar entitled "From Tech to Teaching:  Pursuing a Career in K-12 Education".  In this presentation Dr. Belmonte will cover some of the resources available to help GT students launch their careers in pre-college education.  Lunch for attendees will follow the presentation in the EST atrium.

2013 Science Policy Internship in Washington, DC

Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) is offering a ten-week, Washington, DC-based internship (May 28 –August 2, 2013) made possible through a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a taxable stipend, $3,000 for undergraduates and $4,000 for graduate students, paid in three installments over the course of the summer. The students also will receive housing at George Washington University with other QEM interns as well as round-trip airfare and ground travel reimbursement.

During the internship, students will have an opportunity to: (1) increase their understanding of how science policy is made; (2) further develop their potential for becoming leaders and proponents of increased participation in science and engineering by students from underrepresented minority groups; (3) become knowledgeable about potential/actual barriers preventing minority students from receiving a high quality mathematics/science education; and (4) become familiar with policies, programs, and strategies being implemented to address such issues. The students also will strengthen their research, communications, and other professional skills, and develop a peer network that includes QEM summer interns from across the country.

Students who wish to participate in the internship must currently be a STEM major at an accredited institution and have successfully completed at least the sophomore year before the start of the internship program. They must be from a group underrepresented in STEM.  They also must be returning to a degree-granting institution the following academic year, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. Graduating seniors must be already admitted to and planning to enter graduate school in Fall 2013 to be eligible.

Spring Commencement Fair

The Commencement Fair will be held over a two-day period in the Student Center Ballroom. At the fair you can check on your degree status, RSVP to Commencement, purchase your regalia, take your cap and gown photo, record your commencement clip and meet with various organizations and off-campus vendors.  

All spring graduates are encouraged to attend one of the following days: 

• Wednesday, March 6, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Thursday, March 7, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

2013-14 Imerys North America Scholarship Program

At Imerys (World leader in Industrial Minerals), we understand the value of education. As a result, we have developed our scholarship program to affirm our commitment in assisting students acquire this valuable resource. It is our desire to award a minimum of $5,000 per scholarship recipient. Scholarship funds can be used to cover the cost of books and tuition.

This program does not stop with the scholarship either. Once a student is selected to be a part of our program they also receive customized internship opportunities, mentorship & guidance from our senior leaders, and eventual full time offers in roles established to develop our leaders of tomorrow.

Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW)

Engineers for a Sustainable World will be having a general meeting on Thursday, February 28 at 11:00 am in IC (Instructional Center) Room 205. The speaker will be Dr. Daniel Matisoff from the School of Public Policy and his topic will be "Sustainable Energy Features: challenges and opportunities." We will also be distributing t-shirts for dues-paying members. And, of course, there will be FREE PIZZA for everyone!

We welcome undergraduate and graduate students in all engineering backgrounds who have research interests in sustainability.
